Where it comes from
World Environment Day marks the first day of the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, the world's first environmental summit. How it's celebrated
Millions of people in more than 150 countries take part. Host governments announce new commitments, and communities organise clean-ups, tree planting, races and talks around the issue chosen for the year, from plastic pollution to land restoration. UNEP invites anyone to register an activity, however small.
Did you know
The rotation of host countries began in Bangkok, Thailand, in 1988.
