Where it comes from
The UN World Tourism Organization has held World Tourism Day on 27 September since 1980. The date marks the adoption of the organisation's statutes in 1970, and was chosen because it falls at the end of the northern high season and the start of the southern one.
How it's celebrated
A different country hosts the official celebrations each year; tourism boards run promotions, museums open free, and travellers post where they are. The day is a reminder of what tourism means to small economies and of how to travel with less damage.
Did you know
Tourism accounts for roughly one in ten jobs worldwide.
