A birthday for the language of hope.

Where it comes from

Zamenhof Day falls on 15 December, the birthday of Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof, born in Białystok, then in the Russian Empire, in 1859. Growing up among several languages and frequent conflict, he came to believe that a shared language could help people understand one another.

How it's celebrated

Esperanto clubs around the world meet on or near the day for talks about Zamenhof, poetry readings and book reviews, and often exchange gifts, preferably books written in Esperanto.

Did you know

At about the age of ten, Zamenhof wrote a play about the Tower of Babel, already convinced that language barriers lay behind conflict between peoples.
