Stripes worth saving.

The story

Where it comes from

Global Tiger Day was agreed at the Tiger Summit in St Petersburg in November 2010, the first time national leaders had met to save a single species. The 13 countries where wild tigers still live, from India and Russia to Malaysia, Thailand and China, signed the St Petersburg Declaration. They promised to try to double the number of wild tigers by 2022, the next Chinese Year of the Tiger, a goal known as TX2, and to build awareness by celebrating Global Tiger Day every 29 July.

How it's celebrated

Tiger-range governments and conservation groups such as WWF and the Global Tiger Forum use the day to report on wild tiger numbers and to call for safer forests and an end to poaching. In some countries it is called International Tiger Day. For everyone else, a tiger card is a natural choice: a word of courage for someone facing something hard.

  • The Global Tiger Forum counted about 3,890 wild tigers at the time of the summit and about 5,574 by 2023, led by India and Nepal, which both doubled their numbers.
  • In Russia's Far East, protection brought the Amur tiger back from a few dozen animals to about 500 in 40 years.
  • In 2023 the King of Malaysia declared the Al-Sultan Abdullah Royal Tiger Reserve in Pahang to protect the Malayan tiger, of which only about 150 remain in the wild.
