Take a little care of yourself.

The story

Where it comes from

In March 2026 the UN General Assembly proclaimed 15 April International Wellness Day, on a resolution led by Nepal, the first time Nepal had led the proclamation of an international day at the UN. Its co-sponsors included Singapore, China, India and Sri Lanka. The resolution treats wellness as more than the absence of illness, taking in physical, mental, social, cultural, emotional and ecological well-being. It promotes preventive care and healthy lifestyles, and recognises the value of local communities' traditional knowledge.

How it's celebrated

The UN describes the day as a platform for education, cultural exchange and knowledge-sharing, encouraging wellness practices that are accessible, inclusive and affordable. Nepal's mission to the UN and the World Health Organization marked the first observance with an event at UN Headquarters in New York. For everyone else, it is a gentle nudge to take a walk, get some sleep, call a friend or sit quietly for ten minutes.

  • The resolution was adopted by a recorded vote of 143 in favour and one against, with no abstentions.
  • The UN sees it as a companion to three earlier days: the International Day of Happiness (20 March), the International Day of Yoga (21 June) and World Meditation Day (21 December).
  • It shares its date with World Art Day, which falls on Leonardo da Vinci's birthday.
