The grass that builds houses.

The story

Where it comes from

World Bamboo Day was declared on 18 September 2009 at the 8th World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok by the World Bamboo Organization, to promote bamboo as a fast-growing, renewable material and to protect the traditional crafts and communities that depend on it.

How it's celebrated

Planting days, craft workshops and exhibitions of bamboo architecture and design, especially across Asia and Latin America where bamboo is an everyday material for scaffolding, furniture, food and paper.

Did you know

  • Bamboo is a grass, and some species grow almost a metre in a single day, the fastest growth of any plant.
  • Hong Kong still uses bamboo scaffolding on skyscrapers, tied by hand by specialist workers.
  • A giant panda eats 12 to 38 kilograms of bamboo a day.
