World Day of Social Justice

Next: February 20, 2027

A fair chance for everyone.

The story

Where it comes from

On 26 November 2007 the UN General Assembly declared that 20 February would be celebrated every year as the World Day of Social Justice, recognising that social development and social justice are indispensable for peace and security within and between nations. A few months later, on 10 June 2008, the International Labour Organization unanimously adopted its Declaration on Social Justice for a Fair Globalization, which places decent work for all at the heart of its mission.

How it's celebrated

The ILO and UN agencies hold meetings, webinars and reports on fair work, social protection and reducing poverty and inequality. Trade unions, universities and community groups run talks and campaigns. For most people it is a day to think about fairness close to home: thanking the workers whose jobs keep daily life running, or supporting a group that helps people find decent work.

Did you know

  • The 2008 Declaration was only the third major statement of principles adopted by the International Labour Conference since the ILO's founding constitution of 1919.
  • It was adopted by representatives of governments, employers and workers from 182 member states.
  • Decent work for all is also one of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, Goal 8.
