World Plumbing Day

Thank the people behind the taps.

The story

Where it comes from

World Plumbing Day was created by the World Plumbing Council at its annual meeting in Centurion, South Africa, in October 2009, and was first held on 11 March 2010. The Council, formally set up at a London conference in 1990, brings together plumbing bodies from around the world. It wanted one day a year when people would pause to think about how much their health depends on good plumbing: clean water coming in, and waste water carried safely away.

How it's celebrated

Plumbing associations, training colleges and water authorities hold seminars, competitions, open days and poster contests, and remind people to save water and fix leaks. For everyone else it is a day to thank the person who comes out when a pipe bursts, and to notice the clean water and safe drains that are so easy to take for granted.
