World Rainforest Day

For the forests that make the rain.

The story

Where it comes from

World Rainforest Day was created by Rainforest Partnership, a non-profit in Austin, Texas, that Niyanta Spelman founded in 2007 to help rainforest communities protect the forests they live in. The first World Rainforest Day was held on 22 June 2017. Its aim is to celebrate rainforests, foster a shared sense of responsibility for them and spark action to protect them. Rainforests cover only about 6% of the Earth's surface, yet around half of all the species that live on land are found in them.

How it's celebrated

Rainforest Partnership convenes organisations, activists and ordinary people around the day, and in recent years has held an online summit that drew registrants from 77 countries in 2023. People share what they love about rainforests with #WorldRainforestDay. You can mark it by learning where everyday things such as coffee, cacao and spices first came from, or by walking in a forest near home.
