World Rivers Day
Next: September 26, 2027
Every city was built beside one.
The story
Where it comes from
World Rivers Day began in 2005, at the launch of the UN's Water for Life decade, on the proposal of Canadian river conservationist Mark Angelo, who had run BC Rivers Day in British Columbia since 1980. It is held on the fourth Sunday of September.
How it's celebrated
River cleanups, paddling events, guided walks and school projects in more than a hundred countries; in Kuala Lumpur, events along the Klang and Gombak rivers tie in with the city's River of Life restoration.
