Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born on 27 January 1756 at Getreidegasse 9 in Salzburg, and this Story marks his birthday. Trained by his father Leopold, he was a child prodigy: by the age of five he could play the keyboard and violin, had begun to compose and had performed before European royalty.
How it's celebrated
In Salzburg, the International Mozarteum Foundation holds Mozart Week each January around his birthday, with concerts, opera and talks, and on the day itself a birthday programme and serenade.
Did you know
He was baptised the day after his birth with the Latin names Joannes Chrysostomus Wolfgangus Theophilus.
