Many roots, one shared heritage.

Next: August 31, 2027

Where it comes from

The International Day for People of African Descent was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly on 16 December 2020, on an initiative led by Costa Rica, and was first observed on 31 August 2021. Its date recalls 31 August 1920, when the first declaration of the rights of people of African descent was adopted in New York.

How it's celebrated

The UN, governments, schools, universities and community groups hold talks, exhibitions and cultural programmes celebrating the music, art, literature, science and leadership of the African diaspora. It is also a day to reflect on the work still needed to end racism and discrimination.

Did you know

The General Assembly adopted the resolution creating the day without a vote.
