Global Wind Day

Catch the breeze, feel the power.

The story

Where it comes from

Global Wind Day began in Europe. On 15 June 2007 the European Wind Energy Association, now WindEurope, launched the first European Wind Day, with 62 events in 22 countries and a working-size wind turbine raised on a roundabout in the heart of Brussels' European quarter. In 2009 the association joined forces with the Global Wind Energy Council, the day went worldwide and took its present name. It is held every 15 June as a day for discovering the wind, its power and what it can do for clean energy.

How it's celebrated

Wind farms open their gates for tours, and wind energy associations, schools and communities run exhibitions, workshops, talks and family days. When the day first went global, events ranged from regattas and sports contests to theatre shows. For the rest of us it is a fine day to fly a kite, watch the blades turn on a distant hill, and wonder where our electricity comes from.
