Sustainable Gastronomy Day

Eat local, eat seasonal, eat well.

The story

Where it comes from

On 21 December 2016 the UN General Assembly adopted, without a vote, resolution 71/246, naming 18 June Sustainable Gastronomy Day. The resolution recognises gastronomy as a cultural expression of the world's natural and cultural diversity, and FAO and UNESCO help countries observe the day. 'Sustainable gastronomy' means cooking that takes into account where the ingredients come from, how the food is grown and how it reaches our markets and, eventually, our plates.

How it's celebrated

Cities, chefs and food festivals hold exhibitions, shows and tastings, and FAO shares simple advice: buy what is in season from small farmers, try local foods when you travel, keep traditional recipes alive and waste less. A good way to join in is to cook a dish your grandmother made, with ingredients grown nearby, and share it.
