International Cabernet Day

One grape, its own day.
The story
Where it comes from
Cabernet Day was created in 2010 by Rick Bakas, a wine marketer in California's Napa Valley, as one of the first wine celebrations organised entirely on social media under the hashtag #CabernetDay. It is held on the Thursday before the US Labor Day weekend, at the start of the northern-hemisphere harvest, and is now marked by wineries and drinkers in Bordeaux, Chile, Australia, South Africa and beyond.
How it's celebrated
Wineries open a special bottle, host tastings and go live online; restaurants run Cabernet flights; drinkers post the label they opened. It is a low-key day: a glass shared with someone, and a story about where it came from.
Did you know
- Cabernet Sauvignon is a natural cross between Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc that occurred in 17th-century Bordeaux; the parentage was only proven by DNA testing in 1996.
- It is the most widely planted wine grape in the world, ahead of Merlot.
- The thick skin that gives Cabernet its tannin and long life also lets it ripen well in hot climates, which is why it thrives from Napa to Coonawarra.
