Every culture has something to share.
The story
Where it comes from
On 7 June 2024 the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 78/286 by consensus, declaring 10 June the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations. Proposed by China and co-sponsored by more than 80 countries, it aims to raise awareness of the value of the diversity of civilizations and to promote dialogue, mutual respect, tolerance and global solidarity. The resolution affirms that all civilizational achievements form 'the collective heritage of humankind', and notes that civilizations flourish in contact with one another.
How it's celebrated
The resolution invites countries, UN bodies, universities, civil society and the media to mark the day with educational and public awareness activities, and asks UNESCO and the UN Alliance of Civilizations to help. The UN has marked it with a meeting at its New York headquarters. Closer to home, it is a day to share a meal, a song or a story from another culture, and to ask about one in return.
