International Day of Women Judges

Next: March 10, 2027

For the women on the bench.

The story

Where it comes from

The idea for this day came from a meeting in Doha in February 2020 of the Global Judicial Integrity Network, run by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, where Qatar's Chief Justice and the president of the International Association of Women Judges announced a joint proposal. On Qatar's initiative, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 75/274 by consensus on 26 April 2021, naming 10 March the International Day of Women Judges. It was first observed in 2022, two days after International Women's Day.

How it's celebrated

Courts, judges' associations, law schools and UN offices hold talks, panels and events about women in the justice system and the path to the bench. It is a good day for students who dream of a legal career to hear from women judges, and for the rest of us to learn who serves on our own courts.
