The story
Where it comes from
Vietnamese Women's Day, Ngày Phụ nữ Việt Nam, takes its date from 20 October 1930, which the Vietnam Women's Union counts as its founding. The Union took its present name in 1946, and when the women's organisations of north and south merged in 1976 they adopted 20 October 1930 as their founding date. In 2010 the Communist Party's Secretariat approved 20 October as Vietnamese Women's Day, to honour women's work in families and public life. Sources differ on what the 1930 organisation was first called; many give it as the Women's Anti-Imperialist Association.
How it's celebrated
It is not a public holiday, but it is one of the biggest flower days of the year. Men and children give flowers, cards and small gifts to mothers, grandmothers, wives, daughters, teachers and colleagues; offices and schools hold small ceremonies, and restaurants fill up in the evening. In Hanoi, flower streets such as Hàng Lược in the Old Quarter are crowded with roses and lilies.
