The story
Where it comes from
World Pharmacists Day was created by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) at its 2009 World Congress in Istanbul. 25 September is the date FIP itself was founded, in The Hague in 1912.
How it's celebrated
Pharmacies and pharmacy schools run public-health screenings, medicine-safety campaigns and open days; national associations honour their members. FIP sets a theme each year.
Did you know
- Community pharmacists are often the most accessible health professionals: in many countries a majority of people live within a few minutes of a pharmacy.
- The mortar and pestle and the 'Rx' symbol have been signs for pharmacy since the Middle Ages.
