World Pulses Day
Next: February 10, 2027
Lentils, chickpeas and beans for all.
The story
Where it comes from
World Pulses Day celebrates the dry, edible seeds of leguminous plants: beans, chickpeas, peas, lentils and many more. After the success of the International Year of Pulses in 2016, led by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the UN General Assembly designated 10 February as World Pulses Day in 2018. FAO leads the day, which raises awareness of how pulses help feed the world well while caring for the soil and the climate.
How it's celebrated
Chefs, schools, farmers' groups and food lovers share recipes and cook together, and FAO publishes stories, fact sheets and infographics about pulses around the world. It is an easy day to join in: cook a pot of dal, hummus, bean soup or chilli, try a pulse you have never eaten, or buy from a local grower.
Did you know
- Pulses take nitrogen from the air and fix it in the soil, making the land more fertile.
- They keep for a long time without spoiling, which helps reduce food loss and waste.
- Pulses come in almost every colour, from red, green and white to black and brown.
